According to the description, this is your camera's capability:

The S1000fd's basic shooting modes are as follows:

Auto: Camera selects all exposure values

Program: Auto exposure mode with user control for flash settings, metering mode, etc.

Shutter Priority: User selects shutter speed, and camera calculates aperture for correct exposure

Aperture Priority: User selects aperture, and camera calculates shutter speed for correct exposure

Manual: User selects both aperture and shutter speed

Scene: A total of 15 scene presets are available

Movie: The S1000fd shoots video at up to 640x480, 30fps

Sensitivity ISO 64-3200

Shutter Speed 8-1/2000 seconds

Have you tried using one of the other settings?

Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or the Manual mode?

Any one of these modes will change the shutter speed from 8 to 1/2000 seconds.

As mentioned before, you need to read the manual to learn what each feature provides. If you have a CD in your package, the extended manual is on the CD.
What does the manual say?
