You can find a great deal more information about your camera at: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd8鈥?/a>

In answer to your question, you cannot manually adjust shutter speed as you don't have a manual or shutter priority mode. The most effective alternative is to manually change the ISO value. The 850 has 80/100/200/400/800 and the higher number you use, the faster the shutter speed selected by the camera will be. This is because the higher the ISO, the more sensitive the sesor is to light and hence it can take the picture faster.

Be aware though, above 400 ISO, the pictures may experience 'noise' - or reduced quality, due to the sensor compensating for the higher sensitivity.

Finally, the 850IS does not have an action or sport mode like the respondant above suggests, which would have forced the camera to use the highest shutter speed, although it does have a kids and pets mode which might be worth trying.

Hope this helps! (It's a great camera by the way...)

It's a point and shoot camera which gives you no option to manually adjust your shutter speed and/or aperture.

If you want the camera to select a faster shutter speed, you will need to select one of the options from the Special Scene Mode Menu...such as 'Sport', 'Action' or 'Kids %26amp; Pets', if your camera has it.

If you want to use the camera to take scenes at night you have the option to use Long Shutter Mode...just look it up in the Index.
