Nikon D40 what is ISO and how to change the shutter speed?

I know the basics of the camera just cant figure out these things. Like what ISO is and when to use it and what settings to change it to. Then I try to slow my shutter speed down to get shots of a waterfall but cant find out how to slow it down. Have tried The M,S,P,and A settings and just dont know where to look. I have looked in the viewfinder and all it does is cahnge some numbers that certainly doesnt look like the shutter speed. I know this is a dumb questine. But please help. Thanks

ISO is a measure of how sensitive your sensor is to light. A bigger number means more sensitivity; a smaller number means your sensor is less sensitive to light. The reasons you want a sensor to be less sensitive to light include getting the exposure you want as well as reducing image noise, beside for shooting in really bright light.

Okay, here's some basic instruction.

1) put the camera on a tripod.

2) Set the ISO to 200 (that's the lowest it goes)

3) Put your camera on S for shutter speed preferred.

4) Move the control wheel (it's the knurled wheel) to adjust the shutter speed. Try 1/8 to 1/30 of a second for the waterfall. The display will read 8 for 1/8, 15 for 1/15, 30 for 1/30 of a second. By comparison, for 8 seconds it would read 8%26quot;.

5) Take your photo. The camera will adjust for the shutter speed you've selected. Try not to be in too bright a light, as that may result in some overexposure if the camera cannot get an aperture small enough to block incoming light.
